Crizal Sun technology is unique because AR is applied to the back
surface only, protecting the wearer from backside glare and protecting
the color integrity of the lens. In addition, Crizal Sun lenses utilize
the industry-leading Crizal® Alizé® technology which provides scratch
protection and ease of cleaning with a double-sided hard coat and
super-hydrophobic top coat, creating the most durable, easy-to-clean
sun lens on the market.
For a person wearing glasses, reflections are an annoyance that interfere with vision and create discomfort, leading to eyestrain. In Sunwear lenses, the effects of backside reflections are particularly uncomfortable because they are worn in bright environments where reflective surfaces such as water, snow, sand and pavement are often present. The wearer’s vision is hindered by backside glare, causing the eye to adjust between undesirable light and useful light. (See Exhibit A)
In addition, sunglasses are worn outside, bearing all the elements
and are often not protected by a glasses case when not in use. This
results in dirt, smudges and scratches because the lens is not
protected.
The problem with typical sunglasses combined with AR technology is
that they are designed to achieve opposite goals: sunglasses aim to
block the amount of light entering a lens where AR technology aims to
allow more light to enter the lens. In addition, applying AR to the
front side of a regular pair of sunglasses can cause color changes to
the lens, resulting in an undesirable color change. (See Exhibit
B)
